3: Bahasa Indonesia, English & 汉语

This is my first Blog.

The first thing that bugged me was "whadya wanna call your blog?" - so I ponder and ponder and ponder... Cataya? Sukling? Shuling? Batara Kirana? - Not available, not available, not available.... or too long to be practical and/or remembered....
At the end of the day, I settled with "cstjhin".... even though my apprehension was that my surname is not the easiest or most popular surname in the planet. Well, I guess, I have to make it my own.

Then... I wonder what language I should post it in? Bahasa Indonesia? English? 汉语? The fact that I'm writing in English now should indicate my level of comfort.
Yes, I tend to write in English the easiest/quickest (though, perhaps, not the best - I'm sure you can one or two or gazillion grammatical errors in my postings now or later). I often wonder why that is... Being over-analytical that I am, I came to the conclusion that my graduate study experiences in Canberra, Australia, have shaped my brain/analytical process and how I better express myself scholastically. (Long story short, really).

Then I decide, I shall write in whatever language I want at that moment. It can be Bahasa Indonesia, it can be English and it can even be 汉语 (I still have a long way to go to hone that particular skill).

The point is... this is my blog and I am a daughter of three cultures - Indonesian, English (Western) and Chinese. I was born and raised in Indonesia; I became a different person after enjoying a Western education in Australia; yet I am inherently Chinese.

I have as much love and apprehension to those different cultures or ideologies stereotyped to them.

Then, there is the matter of what sort of things I want to write about.

"Eclectic", I think, is an appropriate  word.

Adjective: Deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources.
Noun: A person who derives ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources.

I am eclectic.

So I might be posting in different language, or different topic, or different style.... but it'd be mine...

15 tahun yang lalu hari ini, sebuah tragedi melumpuhkan nalar dan hati kita di Jakarta. Hari-hari yang paling menakutkan dalam sejarah hidup saya sebagai seorang perempuan Tionghoa di Indonesia, di mana naluri saya terasa terjambak untuk kemudian bertanya secara kritis apa makna menjadi seorang "Indonesia".  Sejujurnya, saya bukan seorang perempuan yang mudah takut. Sebagai seorang siswi di sebuah SMP Katolik di daerah Pecinan, saya sudah terbiasa "tawuran" dan berkelahi dengan lawan jenis yang secara fisik lebih besar dari saya. Tapi 15 tahun lalu, saya mengenal rasa takut yang begitu melumpuhkan. 15 tahun sudah lewat, 15 tahun saya menunda-nunda menulis tentang kejadian saat itu dan tentang timbunan amarah, kesedihan, rasa syukur dan harapan sepanjang 15 tahun ini yang menjadikan saya seperti apa adanya sekarang - dari perempuan Katolik kelas menengah Tionghoa yg memilih menjadi peneliti di thinktank dengan sejarah kontroversial demi Indonesia yg lebih baik.

OPINION: 18 Years Ago Today: May 1998 and to Never Forget

My piece in Jakarta Post today on what happened to me & family in May 98. Every year each May for the past 18 years I have always wanted to write something meaningful. But I always failed. Never could finish the damn thing. I'm still not sure why. This year I finally did it... Original writing is provided below. JP didn't make much changes - some grammars & few selected words. Printed version can be read here . This is one of two articles I sent to JP.  My family and I are amongst many Chinese Indonesian families, who got attacked and made a very conscious decision to not report it. OPINION: (Anti) Corruption in China’s Belt and Road Initiative

Early this year, Laode Syarif, the deputy chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), asked the government to be careful with investments from China, citing data from the United States Department of Justice on enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). The data show 83 FCPA cases involving conduct in China — more than any other country by far, although it turns out all the cases involved multinational corporations operating in China. “If a European or American investor gets caught bribing officials in a foreign country, they will be punished back home. That doesn’t happen in China, or in Indonesia,” Laode said. That is true, albeit partly. One example is the graft case involving Malaysia’s former prime minister, Najib Razak. While investigation reports on Najib are manifold, we have barely heard news about any investigation in China into the Chinese counterpart who was linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad project or other China-linked projects
